AMERICAN ILLLUSTRATION WIN

With this bizarre year being shaken upsidedown so many things came and went kind of completely unnoticed. Recapping now, there’s this nice news. A winning entry for American Illustraion 38. I’ve always been drawn towards attempting to visualise different conditions of the human mind. This was one of a series of images focusing on new and novel approaches to treatments for major depressive disorders. Something I fear will be much needed in the coming month and years. How Instagram transformed our personal lives

Ten years after its first post, the app exerts an almost inconceivable degree of influence over our culture, psychology and relationships

“A 2017 study by the Royal Society for Public Health named Instagram the worst app for mental health because of how anxious and unhappy it makes young people.” Read the feature here.

CUTITOUTXGRIFF X SUNDANCE

Some shots from an amazing trip to Utah and the Sundance Film Festival. The show we created animations for opened the Festival and was screened again in Salt Lake City’s 100 year old Tower Cinema whilst we were there. A whirlwind week of launch parties, after partys, screenings, QnA’s and a few road trips getting lost in the Midway mountains thrown in. Unusual territory for freelance illustrators. The docu-series was made for TV but watching our titles on 60’ cimena screens was very special. Sadly can’t show any real work from the series until later in the year but watch this space..

Historic Royal Palaces

A commission to create series of highly detailed 2m historical collages for the entrance for the newly opened visitors centre at Royal Hillsborough Castle in Belfast. I spent many months researching the history of the Castle and made visits to go through their rich archive of photographs, ephemera and beautifully kept scrap albums dating back to the 1900’s. I spent time gleaning interesting moments and oddities from everything from party invites in the 1930’s to hand written recipes from the kitchens.

In over a century Hillsborough has played host to many historic Anglo Irish meetings and agreements and was official residence for all visiting Royals. Each artwork covered a different aspect of the historic setting. The history of people who graced it’s corridors from William of Orange to The Dalai Lama, The amazing paintings, fixtures, furniture and rooms and the history of the beautiful gardens complete with Pineapple farm and ice house.

I coincidently started off many years ago after art school with a Prince Charles’s Youth Trust small business loan (for a silkscreen set up) - so it was very interesting to have all the illustrations for the castle ‘signed off’ by HRH Prince Charles himself all these years later. A full royal circle you might say.

Prodigy

A year or so ago I was asked by The Prodigy to create ideas for new LP art - A pretty open & minimal brief based on the bands dna & musical ethos - 3 - 4 days for a deadline, a no win no fee kind of pitch. My collage sketches ranged from a Mother Earth Cadaver to a smoked head of a Moirai chief, a beelzibub child, a satanik post-apocalyptic assassin {in tights} and a series of pimped up Prodigy Hotwheels HotRods. I worked around the clock and one night at 3am ended up throwing darts into my library to generate random ideas. These images were all starting points. The ProdHotRod or ProdRod was my favourite - I imagined the band animated into a real toycars, boostin’ around in an invented Matchbox Hotrod. I’ve been real hesitant to post these unseen test works - but Ive increasingly been thinking maybe me sharing the 3 days I spent privatley immersed in their world is my way to pay a tribute to the life and times of the Mr. Keith Flint. and the Prodigy boys. I myself was a teenage breakbeat Dj n crate digger in NWLondon in 88-91’, the golden time when London started mashing hiphop breaks into US house n UKreggae & created a new - then nameless hybrid music - the birthplace for many a genre - jungle etc.. The Prodigy crew were in the thick of it then and I remember being captivated by Sharkys energy and 3am dancing in squat rave in Dollis Hill around then. Mind blowing. I doth my cap to the boys journey - timeless. It really was an honour to have caught their eye and be in the mix for LP Art so many years later. Peace & Respect. 🏴‍ #ripkeefflint #cutitoutstudio
